{"id":245,"date":"2024-08-22T12:24:50","date_gmt":"2024-08-22T12:24:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/phil-c.com\/wphi\/?p=245"},"modified":"2025-11-08T13:30:03","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T13:30:03","slug":"telemann-in-st-lukes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/phil-c.com\/wphi\/2024\/08\/22\/telemann-in-st-lukes\/","title":{"rendered":"Telemann in St Lukes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Before I start my full-time job, I have to get this out of my system: Can I &#8220;just&#8221; record a short piece, nicely and accurately?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What I learned<\/span><\/strong> from making this recording (well, most of it I already knew)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Playing the trombone convincingly is incredibly difficult. I&#8217;m a pretty good player and I know this piece really well, but\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are always little hiccups, no matter how many times I play the piece.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&#8217;s not even in tune!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the better of two &#8216;performances&#8217; I played a really stupid, wrong note and so had to edit (1:24).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Third and subsequent run-throughs were terrible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After all <a href=\"https:\/\/phil-c.com\/wphi\/2024\/08\/13\/microphone-positioning\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"230\">this experimenting with microphones<\/a> I went to a different church (St Luke&#8217;s). With identical positioning of the  single (omni\/Jecklin) pair the acoustic was so very different that there&#8217;s now far too much reverberation. Whereas you can <em>add <\/em>reverb at home, you can&#8217;t remove it!\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>So: even more appreciation of the pro engineers who have to get this stuff right!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once again, if you&#8217;re going to do video, you need an extra person. The second camera that I had set up (which might have made it a bit more interesting) was on fixed focus and &#8211; despite careful calibration &#8211; came out blurred and useless.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Playing the trombone (and some other instruments, but I think particularly the trombone) is a bit like throwing thousands of darts and expecting them all to hit the right number.
